I'm looking at getting a Fluval FX4 to replace my current canister. However I was watching an unboxing and the guy pointed out that the hose it comes with is a ribbed hose, his criticism was that crap can get caught in these little ridges and it's better to replace it with some smooth hose.

Here is what it ships with: http://a.co/gVsxVDT

Now my question is, can I just order some 1" hose and replace it, or do I need connectors? From the picture it looks like the Fluval hose has some end pieces but I don't know if that's because the ribbed hosing can't hold on without it, or if smooth hose will need the same.

Any input is always welcome, thanks!

I would say you are good with ordering the hose, you might need some hose clamps though.
