I have a 30g w/ Mg levels currently at 960. I want to bring that up to 1300.

I use B-ionic 2 part daily which was not raising the Mg levels, so I bought their magnesium supplement. The directions tell to add 1.5 ml per gallon per day which would take about a month to achieve my desired levels. What are the downsides of dosing more than, say, 2-3x the prescribed amount? How about bringing it from 960 to 1300 in a week?

That is pretty low.... What salt mix are you using???.... I dose with the B-Ionic also. If it is low i always just go for it and dump in what is needed..... May not be the best or recommended method but it works for me.

I would never raise the mag by overdosing as you are going to bring in other troubles and nothing good in this hobby happens with doing things fast. What is your water change water mag levels? Have you even tested that? Most people can keep it at normal levels just through water changes, but if you want to raise it then I would go the dosing directions and if it takes a month then so be it! If it takes longer than that then so be it! There are plenty of formulas out there for mag dosing recipes and all say never dose over 100 at a time so if current level is 960 then you don't want to go over 1060 in one dose.....

I use Instant Ocean (not the reef formula). I have never tested freshly made water.
you should. if the new salt water is low doing water changes could actually lower the mag. always test the big 3 on each bag or bucket of salt.

I too needed to raise my mag and I did so by dosing 30ml a day into my 40G total system. At the same time I was adding 8ml of calcium and alk but with 30ml a day I noticed my alk and calcium dropping. Too much mag will lower everything else and when I did this I lost a few SPS pieces. If anything go on bulkreefsupply and use there calculator to kind what can safely dose per day. You much always test when dosing, wheather its everyday or maybe once a week, until you find out what the tank need to stay at the levels you would like them at. Currently my tank parameters are Alk: 10, Calcium: 420 and Mag 1320. Everything seems to be doing very well and growing nicely. I dose 8ml of calcium/Alk every morning. Magnesium is only on a "as needed" basis. Once you get your mag up you'll see that it'll stay there for a good while. A better way to keep your parameters in check is to buy a good coral type salt mix. Im using RedSea Coral Pro Salt and have been since day one, even when I started my 10G nano. I hope this helps and good luck with your tank. Joe

It would require 1020ml. If your salt mix is off that much you may want to look at bringing it up in your freshly made water, But doing it cheaply with Epsom salts/magflakes. Otherwise your going to be using an awfuly lot of Mag additive. Another reason to pick a salt that mixes up with better numbers. Save you the trouble of having to dose the fresh mix to get it to where it needs to be.
