Here are Randy's 2 articles - I'd find a method and try it and see how it goes. Maybe carbon dosing with vinegar?
Rinsing mechanical filters (or a filter roler) would reduce your nitrates/phosphates by roughly 30%; skimmers remove roughly 25-30% of dissolved organics.
