Reef without CleanUp Crew?

Anyone run or know if a mixed reef can be run without a clean up crew?

I’m considering adding a tusk and/or triggerfish. In case they decided to eat all the hermits and trochus snails in the tank.

I don't use one. They are a pain. Snails get killed by crabs. Or they knock over everything.
