Hey guys I am starting a new system and just built a 20 gallon long sump. Should I do a substrate or no substrate?

IMO. Shallow sand is a dertitus trap. So is rubble.
You could do a Dsb but go with no or Little Rock. But you need want bugs and worms.
LR only will make it easy to clean.

I personally like a bare bottom refugium with chaeto and maybe a rock or 2 . I find a ref with sand/rock is a nutrient trap. It will need to be cleaned out and replaced sooner or later.
Also good job on the sump. Looks good !

I'm sorry you are using alot of lingo and I am very new at this in other words can you dumb this down

Go with no substrait. It's easy to clean and you'll need to. You can look into more advanced options later on.
Use a few big piece of rock. Not little ones. But it's not a must.

No substrate(sand)...I built a fuge just like yours and let me tell ya, everything settles right in that middle compartment. you'll end up having to constantly vacuum the sand and its not easy because its shallow.
