Looking for some opinions on the Redsea Max E170.... is it worth the money? Anyone have one that can tell me some pros and cons?

I like the simplicity of the reefer I have. You will probably want the sump within no time. I rather have the sump only and not have to worry about the back compartments. It's all about what you expect you will be doing with the system.

Is it due to the inefficiency of the built in one or is it just because you just can't beat a sump? I'm not going to have a large bio-load as far as fish and invertebrates, but of course pack it with coral.

It's much easier to perform maintenance. You have a lot more room for equipment compared to an aio. It's cleaner looking to have everything under the tank. I try to see how I would upgrade things in the long run to save money by not having to keep upgrading things.
