I'm looking to get some advice on what fish to stock my red sea reefer 250 (~55g) with. Potentially more importantly though I'm also looking for some advice on the order and the time lines over which to do it. I would add that, my focus at the moment is on stabalising the tank - I won't be adding anything but CUC till I'm confident that's the case, I have zero interest in having fish die on me like that again (context).

Some details:
  • From prior to crashing, I still have a Clownfish (Amphiprion Ocellaris) who is around 2 inches long and a Convict Blenny (Pholidichthys Leucotaenia) who is around 6.5 inches long. I also have around 2-3 snails and 3-4 crabs
  • The tank has a sandbed of between 0.5 and 4 inches with most of it being 2 inches
  • There is a decent chunk of live rock in there with lots of caves and overhangs
  • I have various soft and lps corals which I will likely add do, I am nowhere near reads for SPS however
  • The tank has a refugium with cheato and some various pods
  • I also have some a small patch of Gracilaria
  • Historically I have had a problem with green hair algae, there is still some in the tank though it is fairly under control
  • I do not have a lid
In terms of the fish themselves, I'm open to ideas. Whilst I loved the idea of having something that would school or a tang/foxface, the tank is probably just not big enough. So I defer to your wisdom and experience. What would work well with what is already in the tanks and what order should I be adding it? Finally, what level of clean up crew would work with that stocking level?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Flasher wrasse, pinks streaked wrasse, black cap basslet, lots of choices. With 4 " of sand you can even get a jawfish but you need chunky sand for that.

Dont get fish that get too big for the tank, nothing bigger that 4" at adult size is my advice

quarantine your fish and you can avoid tank crashes. If you don't will almost surely have another

Get a lid
