I have a bucket of old matrix which i was thinking about adding to my new reef. It has been dry for a few years. I decided to rinse it in RO water over night, dumped and refilled. I did this 3 times and then tested for phosphates as it smelt like rotting marine life. Well, the hanna checker read 0.9ppm and the vial was visibly blue before putting in the checker for 3mins.
Has anyone had success removing this much phosphate from old rock or media. I am wondering if it is worth the effort and risk an algea outbreak rather then just buying another 10kgs of media?
TIA
