So I’m not THAT new to salt water but I’ve never had hermit crabs in my tank before. I just set up a reefer a while back and now have a few blue leg hermits. Super dumb question, but should I throw in some various size empty shells for them?

Not dumb at all. As your hermits grow, they will need bigger shells. If you have snails, they may kill and steal the shell from the snail. It definitely won't hurt to add some empty shells. Just make sure they haven't been treated to make them pretty. You should be able to get some for cheap or free from your LFS.
Perfect! I feel like a while back someone told me not to leave empty shells in the water. Although I can’t give you their reason, but I didn’t completely agree with them. I’ll try to pick up some empties of various sizes and toss them in. Thanks for the advice!
