I'm in the process of putting together my new 120g tank and I'd like to use my reef octopus sump as a fuge but that leaves no place for a skimmer. Has anyone else modded an internal(regular in sump) model to run externally? There is so few factory made external skimmers for under $400, so I thought I might be able to make something else work out.

Have you considered a hob for your sump? Reef Octopus makes a 2000 that may be suitable for your tank. I use a 100 for my nano that I am happy with.

Check out the CoralVue website. I just picked up a Regal 200 external skimmer with a Varios pump for under $400 in the clearance section. They had several of the Diablo skimmers heavily discounted since they swapped over to the Regal line but most of the diablos have been converted to the Varios pump anyway. They are right over in Slidell as well so shipping was very fast for me.

I have an SWC250A that I no longer use. It can be used in recirculation mode. I used it this way for a while when I first got it. Great skimmer.

They stopped making the askoll 1500 pump for it and I bought the askoll 1350 pump...I think that's the model. Its not as powerful as the old 1500 so I decided to get a DC pump. When I started to look for a new dc pump to replace the askoll pump. I found a holiday deal on a reef octopus elite skimmer that was the same price as buying the dc pump by itself pretty much. So I got a new skimmer that I can disassemble and remove from my sump unlike the SWC that I have to disconnect my sump and slide out to get to it... Its big.

If you are interested let me know. You would have to get a pump for it as I don't think the askoll 1350 I have with it pulls enough air for extreme skimming. Your budget would then be over 400 because the dc pumps are not cheap.

I got a Diablo 300 Ext with the VariouS 6 pump for $550! It's half of what the Regal costs and they are almost identical! It's a little big for my set up but the 200 was sold out so I thought what the heck it is a DC pump anyway.

I am loving mine so far and I actually got the Diablo 250 (not sure why I typed Regal 200). The skimmer is fairly quiet and pulls a TON of air. I'm confident that it would be hard to beat for what I paid and I would recommend one of the Diablo skimmers from Coral Vue to anyone that has room for it.

try to expand that 400 a little reef octopus has a few really good external skimmers. I am running an SRO 3000ext way overkill for my lil 50 but skims awesome. they have smaller ones too che out the link.
