so here is my situation

300 gallon display tank. Livestock is pretty heavy. 2 large tangs, 2 medium tangs, 3 clowns,1 blenny, 1 large foxface, cleaner wrasse, 2 chromis. Corals are mostly softy and a few LPS, then the normal cleanup crew and a pair of cleaner shrimps.
I’m running a Skimz kone 204 skimmer, BRS rates it at 150 gallons heavy bioload. I have two chambers in my sump, each one has a filter sock with a return running into it. I have nothing in the first chamber and the skimmer in the other one. There is also a ten gallon remote refugium next to the sump that plumbs into the third chamber where the return pump is. I also have a dual chamber reactor with carbon and GFO.

I recently picked up a simplicity skimmer (240dc) that is rated for 120 gallon heavy bioload. So I was thinking I could run this skimmer in the empty chamber to help take up the load.

Is there any reason this wouldn’t work??

I’m really don’t want to spend the money on a big skimmer for the tank.

Thanks reefers

That will work! The larger skimmer is providing more volume for bubbles and consequently more surface area for nutrients to bond with the bubbles. A second simmer does the same. You have just doubled your skimmer maintenance with two skimmers, though.

Yes it will work but your bio load is no where near what I would call heavy, I would call you bioload very light for a 300 gallon tank.

The tangs are very large. They put out quite a bit of waste. More livestock will be added slowly over time. Just want to be ready. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Especially in the reefing world

Yeah that is exactly what I was thinking myself, lol. Heck I have more fish than that in a 240g and will be adding a few more soon.

You can. The only downside is that you have another skimmer to maintain and the power associated with it. Personally speaking I would see how they both run, see which was works better, then take the other offline and run with one. See how it does. You may find that it isn't necessary if it works well.
