After having my 90 gallon setup for a few months, I decided to take my 36 gallon bow front freshwater and convert it to a softie Coral Saltwater tank with only a few fish.
It currently has a Fluval 307 Canister plus an Aquaclear 50 HOB, I’ve always over filtered on my freshwater tanks.
I have added a Jebao OW-10 Wavemaker and will add a second one soon.
Lighting is a Philizon 165w black box. The 20” long version, not the 16”.

Looking for ideas on what I should put in the canister and HOB filter for media. Also my canister has a spray bar on the return. I have it aimed across the top of the tank. Is that the best way to aim it? I should still have the regular Output nozzle if that is a better option.
also thinking about getting a HOB skimmer. My 90 has a 30 gallon sump with Skimmer and I find it helps.

Outside of the standard biomedia/rubble rock, and some sponge and polyfilter that should cover most of the needs for the filtration. And if your committing to a softy only tank I also don’t really think a skimmer is all that necessary since they enjoy dirty water for the most part.

My problem is that I know I’ll end putting more than just a few fish in there. So many great fish, so little tank space, lol.
I’ll have a look at some options for the media. Any “brand/type” recommended? I know some are better than others and it’s not always about the name brand.

I have heard good things about seachem’s matrix bio media and for sponges in my cichlid canister I use these Sponge pads and they collect a lot of debris.
If you want a really good HOB skimmer then the Aquamaxx 1.5 is one of the best, I use it on my 40 breeder and it pulls some serious skimmate.

Perfect. Thanks.
