On my current build I've been thinking a lot about how I can set my system up for easy water changes. I would like to be able to pump 40 gallons out of my system and run that water directly into my house drain pipe. Once the 40 gallons is out I will have my mixing station close enough to where I can just turn on a switch and pump 40 gallons of fresh saltwater back in. Getting the fresh saltwater in is pretty easy, my question is what's the best way to pump the old saltwater out? Do I tie into my return pump plumbing and direct it to the house drainage? I'm not sure how much water I would be able to pump out that way though because water won't be coming down from the display anymore if I do that.

Any suggestions?

I run 3 tanks off of an automatic water change system using the Litermeter III. Once you program the unit to how much to change and calibrate the pumps, it then removes small amounts of water 150 times a day. This constant changing of water results in a 6% waste of new water being removed over time. I started three years ago and it works great.

I have a second output plumbed into my return with a gate valve. My basement door is about 10' away from my tank... as soon as you open the door there is a hose end that attaches to that outlet on my return plumbing (the other end as affixed to my basements sump pit).

So technically all I do is attach that hose to my sump, close the valve to my tank and open the waste valve.

When its done emptying I turn on the pumps and hose from my water station and my sump starts to fill up with fresh SW.

While its filling, I tuck the waste hose back away behind the basement door.
I have a 150g aquarium and my water changes, including refilling my 8g top off container takes about 9 minutes.

This is actually what I had in mind almost exactly. I'm worried about how much you can pump out though due to the display overflow height not letting any water come down once it's below it. How much can you get out at a time?
