I started a new 300DD with a basement sump and i decided i wanted to try Siporax instead of the marine pure blocks . i made a compartment in my sump to stack these and ensure that water flow has to flow over the top and out the bottom and thru the media .

Now i did rinse this before i put into my sump but not for any extended period of time , now this has been running for a month now , i run carbon but my water still looks cloudy ? has anyone else experienced this using this ? or any issues with this product ? if so is there something else i can do to clear up the water ? Ive run many tanks in the past and all have been crystal clear ..... will this clear over time ? i am going to try a filter sock to see if this helps but wanted to throw this out there and pick your brains !!

Thank you

I’ve used Siporax for a few years now. I have not experienced cloudy water. Only low NO3.

You likely have a bacterial bloom. If you would like to clear your water quickly...run 10 micron felt socks and it will clear. I promise you that. Buy at least 4 of them because they clog fast.

I have used siporax in anaerobic conditions (goal - denitrification). Never seen or heard of any event of cloudiness. However – in my anaerobic environment they leak Si – my TRITON ICP tests shows a rising level of Si during 1.5 years – finally when it reach 20 ppm (recommended 0.1 ppm) I took it out. Since that time (14 months ago) it has stabilized around 0.3 ppm (Si) I did a 70 % WC 14 months ago – after that no WC. Last year of the first period no WC either. I did not see any serious effects on my biological life during this journey but when I got Si precipitation on my windows – I took it away. In my case – it was surly the Siporax that create the problem but there is a lot of reports of no effect’s other aquariums. IMO – the reason for this is that it maybe not releases Si during aerobic conditions.

IMO you should not stack the the way you do - I had then in nor order at all - I just poured them down there I want to have them. IMO – all of these channels of different size that will be created that way help to mechanical filter the water. It will be a lot of fast – slow – fast running micro environment in the Siporax, hence act like sedimentation zones

Sincerely Lasse

Your problem is most probably not due to siporax. Its a bacterial bloom. I am using them since last 3 years and they work like a charm. But you need to clean them once a year because they trap quite a bit of crap and that can elevate your nutrient levels.

I’ve run them and still do. I have not had this cloudy issue you have and I agree with other that this is most likely a bacterial bloom. There have been reports of Si leakage but I’ve not experienced this. Before I ran my Siporax I soaked it and rinsed it several times and then ran it in a container with GFO . If you were to experience this then it would most likely fuel a diatom bloom. Diatoms love Si from my experience. Most If not all commercially available GFO not only remove phosphates but Si as well. If you believe this a a possible diatom bloom then I’d recommend running a phosphate remover ie GFO. Also I didn’t ask if this is a new tank... one in current operation... or one that’s been in operation for over 1 year. Good flow through the noodles is important.

this is a new tank set up , month and a half , i did start the tank with Probidio bacteria , the start up and the pro package larger viles ....... and after everything i have done i have to believe this is a bacteria bloom , i will wait it out and see what happens ?

thanks much

I am running a basement sump with a Reefflo Hammerhead pump , now this is fully open and pushing about 4500 GPH so the drainage of this tank is HUGE , i have my drains dumping into a 3" pipe that
" T 's " off and dumps into 2 separate boxes that have filter floss in them , with the amount of force from the flowing water filter socks are not an option so im hoping the floss will help ?

thank you
