Alright after more investigation into my skimmer noise I was able to diminish a bunch of it by reducing vibrations the pump was transferring to the sump. Itis still making a rather load mechanical noise, but I noticed if I covered the air intake on the silencer it got dead silent. I couldn't keep my finger on it for long or it would overflow, but I was thinking this clue may point someone in the right direction for what the source of the noise is. So basically when it pulls air it is quite noisy but when the air line is obstructed and it just pulls water it makes no noise. Is there something wrong with my venturi valve? The skimmer is a skimz sm121 if that helps.

I have an Octopus NWB 200 that did the same thing you describe. I replaced the impeller and it stopped.

Did you check to make sure there isn't anything caught in the impeller .... snail, algae etc. I don't know anything about your skimmer but occasionally mine will get something caught up in there and it does the same thing ..... makes no noise when you plug the air intake.

I appreciate the help...i have to get this noise back to normal. the tank is in my study room and it makes it hard.

I say the impeller. Check for a broken pin/bad mesh, when there is air in the mix it can wobble, when there is much denser water only it holds still. THat's my theory anyway. ;)

here is a video I made last night showing me taking apart my skimmer and also demonstrating the noises it makes. it makes no noise when the air intake is covered. it makes less noise when water intake is covered. sorry for the off color and the shaking...apparently I wanted you to think you were a hunting snake.
