Hey guys. I recently started a nuvo 10 and planned on a having a couple gobies. The tank has 2 snails, 2 small red leg hermits, a small emerald crab, a pom pom crab, and a small skunk cleaner. I used dry rock and dip all corals (all of which are growing and doing great...mushrooms, softies, and 2 leathers) so I'm pretty confident there's no scary hitchhikers. I'm using the mesh cover that comes with nuvo tanks, so there is a small gap around the edge but I did not find either of 2 missing fish...read on...

Pretty sure I lost my second goby today...in as many weeks. Had a yellow clown goby for a couple days then it suddenly went missing one day. Added a rainford goby a week later (~last weekend), and now today he's gone mia as well. Tank cycled for a nice long while (nitrates are high in the 30-50 range, but no ammonia or nitrites), and I top off with fresh water daily. Salinity about 1.025 per freshly calibrated refractometer.

Any ideas? Neither goby was eating super well, so it's possible they died due to illness or hunger and the crabs cleaned them up very quickly. Didn't notice parasite spots on either fish. I wouldn't suspect any of those inverts to kill a goby. Both fish were active, swimming around the tank and getting used to everything, the rainford even more so than the ycg...again, hard to say if he really ate anything substantial but he was picking at pods a bit. I know they can be fussy eaters...I'll get a tank bred one if I try another.

At this point I'm not really sure what to do with this tank. I feel like if I add another fish it'll disappear like the others within a week, leaving me unsure what the heck even happened, and assuming it died. I could disassemble the rocks and yank the two non-hermit crabs. I could give up on "cool" fish and just put clowns in there...bleh. I originally planned a small goby (hopefully rainfordi), yellow assessor, and a pink streak or possum wrasse. Decently high bio load but doable especially with the extra biomedia and large amount of live rock I've got in there. Help?!

I'll be danged. I was messing around and pulled out the media basket, and the rainford somehow made it into the very bottom chamber of the rear compartment. Now to coax him out somehow.....too small to fit my hand way back there. Lol maybe the ycg is in there too

Rescue mission successful, coaxed him into the return area and netted him. Only been back there for maybe 24 hours. Huh, I guess I learned to never underestimate the ability for a fish to jump...luckily he went into the back instead of into my desk. Bonus pic of him back in the tank.
