Hi everyone, I've had my aquarium up for about 8 months now, I've noticed these little red things growing on my power head and I'm not sure what it is. They are hard like rock. And very sharp. I have 1 clown fish, 2 engineer gobies, a few snails and hermit crabs. Its a 37 gallon column aquarium. Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.

If you decide to try to eradicate them like I tend to do, make sure you crish them at the base. Crushing only the tube will not kill them.

+10 on vermited snails. When I inherited my tank they were bad...constant silk strings every time I fed. They were all over my live rock. I invested in a six line wrasse and I honestly, over the 2 months I've had him, have not seen the dreaded fishing string sweeping through my tank. I do find the bitten off hard ends of the worm housing scattered on the sand bed, though. I've been told that yellow tang eat them, as well(I wasn't aware of this, only the wrasse). I have one also. Only time I see them is on the under side of a rock I occasionally flip over, and like others mentioned, I crush them to smithereens.

Yup... vermetids. I had loads about 3-9 months after setting up... covered all the rock, equipment and most of the rear and side glass. I have only ever seen my (now moved on) yellow boxfish actually eat them. But they haven't reappeared since. I have a yellow coris wrasse and yellow tang... either could be responsible for keeping them st bay.
