Hi all!
I recently created a thread to address some of my sps issues concerning coloration. I have been working on a few changes that may help improve the color of my sps but I wanted to create a thread to focus entirely on my lighting situation and possible options. I currently have a standard 150 gallon tank (72x18x27) and I run two regular hydras and two hydra 52's above the tank. The lights are oriented with the two hydras perpendicular to the tank on either end and the two hydra 52's parallel to the tank in the middle. They are basically hung like this l - - l across the tank at about 10 inches. I recently changed my percentages to 37CW 37R 37G 100V 100DB 100RB and 100UV. My coloration is not entirely poor but it is indeed intriguing. I have some acros with decent colors, some that are mostly brown, and some in between that are colored on the tips and brown closer to the base. Another issue that I have had is shading underneath each piece and closer to the base of the branches. This is mostly shading from the coral itself. I have tried rearranging my lights before but I cannot get rid of the shading. I am looking for possible options or solutions to this problem so that I may have better luck with my sps. I am currently considering the possibility of putting in two 2-bulb retro-fit t5's, one in front and one behind the hydra 52's. A second possibility is completely switching to a t5 unit; I like the look of the 6-bulb ATI Sunpower. Anyways if anyone has any thoughts or opinions on my situation I would love to hear them.

Shadowing is inherent from LEDs. Add four T5s and you'll see a drastic improvement. Cut down on your LED intensities if you do add supplemental lighting too, so you don't burn the corals.

You know I knew they were important from my reading online and my LFS guy told me he doesn't think they are that important. Thats why I am so afraid to go with a retro-fit kit. I figured if Im going to do it then do it right and go ATI.

There are plenty of good retrofit kits out there. Personally I'd be looking for one with a multifaceted reflexor that is well crowed and polished and attaches to the bulb so you can adjust the angle of the reflector.

Ronnie I notice that the TEK retro-fit kit does not come in 60 inch. So to span the entire tank I would have to buy 4 of the 36 in kits to put two bulbs in the front and two in the back if Im not mistaken. MontiFanatic402, those look like they could work. The LET sells a 60 in kit which would mean I would just need the two kits, one for the front and one for the back. To be honest since I have never looked into a retro-fit kit before I have never heard of either of these brands. Have either of you used either one and seen their performance and results? Ive made my fair share of mistakes in this hobby and I would not want to make another.

The LET kit is pretty much what ATI uses.......I havent used one myself, but I was going to, until I went ahead and bought a ATI sunpower and went all T5. I had a DIY LED that I was gonna add T5 too......and this kit was the best I could find

The only difference in the kit from ATI stuff is the reflector, its slightly less reflective, like hardly!!!

It seems like that kit is a really good price for a two bulb 60in. Do you feel that a retro-fit kit in conjunction with my hydra 52s would give me the results I'm looking for, as opposed to a full t5 fixture?

For SPS, I'd be strictly looking at 400w 20k Radium Halides. Theres way to many SPS Reefers out there switching back from LEDs. Then you can suppliment with VHO Actinics, this is going back to old school, but imo, this has always been the best color pop configuration out there.

I understand that MH have always been the tried and true method for sps but with their cost, heat and electricity I don't know if Im willing to switch to them for a tank that isn't SPS dominant.
