Sump size.

Yea everyone was worried about surface skimming so they said 2 boxes but if you got good surface flow in the tank I'd think it would be safe to assume it's be cycled thro.... and I don't know much just basing off common sense.

See that's why I don't like local stores all thay much... looking at the right now $$$ for a newbie. Not the let's do him right and he'll keep coming back. They just agree with whatever you say to them.. or suggest things without explanation. I'm 100% new. So.. easily influenced. Why I joined this. Have second guessed his opinions now and about to pick up my tank and find local reeFer to drill and explain pros and cons of things. If I could find one.

Ok we got ahold of him he cancelled the order and gonna talk with me more. Explained I wanted to know the ins and outs. (No pun) hehe so I'm 100% satisfied rather than second guessing influenced decisions. He's ok with that. Glad he's gonna work with me. Going to be doing a stand test and leak down test tonight

My preference and what I generally saw when I was building my tank was that balancing the flow through 2 boxes can be challenging (but doable) where if you have one box you do not have to worry about balancing anything. Granted, this is only an issue if you are using one of the siphon style drain options (herbie or bean). The overflow weir length will determine your surface skimming ability and it really makes no difference if you have 1 box with 30" or 2 boxes with 15" each, so my preference would be the one large box.

I would highly recommend one box with 3 drains to start with (search BeanAnimal drain) as to my knowledge this is what most people wish they had if they have another setup. Basically, you will have 1 drain that stays dry (upturned elbow in my picture), 1 drain that functions as a duroso(ish) drain with low flow and one drain that is a full siphon regulated by a valve. The full siphon drain handles 90%+ of your flow leaving only a small amount in the open channel drain and the 3rd upturned elbow only handles water during an emergency if another pipe is clogged or during startup. In this setup you would have to have clogs in all 3 drains for the tank to overflow as both the open channel and emergency drain will for a full siphon if the water level rises. Some will probably say this drain setup is overkill on smaller tanks but after running it on my 120 I would not run anything else.

Thanks and that was what I was recommended in the beginning of my build thread. Was considering doing a thinner c2c basically the width of a pipe elbow to fit. Run it glass to glass if I can find smoked
Glass I'll do that. If not to much more. I just want to do it once and be 100% satisfied with what I got. Cause this will be my tank I have to look at everyday. Imy patient been making decisions due to not knowing what I'm doing and not asking enough questions I guess. But that's my plan now. Thin c2c with bean animal.

That sounds like the best plan to me. Mine is about 4" front to back and 5" tall and I could have gotten away with making it a little smaller but not too much without modifying the elbows. I do wish that the drains were hidden but at the same time I like being able to see in the overflow to make sure nothing is in there that shouldn't be. I will most likely upgrade to gray or black 90s to hide it a little better.

Yea. Thanks for all your advice helped me reassure I was on the right track the first time. All the research reading and looking at other builds maybe has sunk in. Haha. Good to know there are others that wanna see one succeed. Thanks again.
