Hey alll, I’m thinking about upgrading my 20Long to a 40 breeder. Would a tank of this size be manageable w/o a sump and skimmer? I already have the 40b so need some convincing to upgrade I guess.

Aquaclear110 was the plan but I want some people’s opinions

What is your plan for fish and/or corals? IMHO, an AC110 is less than optimal on a 40b, but if you have low stocking, live rock/live sand, frequent water changes, and do regular water testing then it would work.

Pair of clowns, tailspot blenny, goby of some sort, fire shrimp and maybe a blue damsel if he’s not a pita to the clowns. Zoas and soft corals and maybe a hammer coral later on down the road. I’m pretty consistent when it comes to water changes and testing and stuff.

Watch your water parameters and let it tell you if you need additional filtration. You could always drill the tank for a sump now and then cap it so you have the flexibility to add the sump with better filtration in the future without doing a complete tear down of the tank to drill later. Either way, good luck!

I used the Octopus Hob 100
Still have it not being used now sense I moved from 40 to a 60 cube with a 40 breeder sump

All of the tanks I have ever owned were sumpless. On my current 80 gallon softly/lps reef I only run 2 aqua clear 70's with chemipure. Before that I ran a 40 breeder with the aqua clear. It can be done easily.

Here is my current 80 gallo

Welp I decided to stick with the 20 long for now. Thanks for the reply’s

I have a 40 breeder that I drilled for a sump. The main reason is I wanted to hide everything away from the main tank. You can definitely run a 40 breeder without a sump. You don't need a HOB filter for the bio-filtration. Your rock can handle that; but you may want a HOB to hold any media (GFO/carbon). In that case you only need something capable of 5x to 10x turnover (200-400 gpm).
