I have a Eheim heater - actually two of them. I set them to 78, but the tank temperature seems to go above that. I do have the LED light on and the lid closed. But weird thing is, the termperature says 82, and while the heater is set to 78, the light is on. So I tried another heater, and it seems to be doing the same thing... I am thinking about trying another thermometer to measure the temperature, but I doubt that the reading is wrong... why is my heater on?

With my heater in the sump I have to keep it set at 85 to keep the tank at 80, heat loss on transfer, and like Scotty said the lid will hold heat in.

Mine is out in the display tank. I have a 32 G biocube.
Yes, it was calibrated.
I've now set it to 76, and the temp. is 79.2 and the light is still on. I took a reading from a second thermometer, and it confirms the first is accurate.

Is this a jager? Had the same thing happen and roasted a holding tub full of frags. Found out the thermostat straight up didn't work and it topped out the water temp at 85*...

Probably stating the obvious, but could your heater have failed in the "on" position?

If it's not the heater, and the thermometer is reading correctly, then it has to be another source for heat.

Sounds like you should re calibrate, & make sure it is not faulty.
Both of them though? I wonder if mine is maxing out at 82 degrees.... Right now, I keep turning down the temp on the heater to see if it still stays on.

If you do 1 why not 2?
Better safe than sorry, stranger things have happened for sure.
If it stays on it's stuck & faulty.
