These prices ... really?

I found this one extremely entertaining...

Within the last week a vendor posted the next greatest ultra rare paly up for grabs. The vendor actually stated it was a hitchhiker found on another coral they recieved. They have grown it from the 3 polyps that were found hitchhiking on the coral they purchased into 6 polyps (ok, nothing wrong there). The asking price for these hitchhiker polyps was $150 per polyp. Really? A coral which they received as a freebie hitchhiker is now worth $150 per polyp. I for one find that disturbing.

I don't mind people paying high dollar for these "high end ultra only in existence" corals. One reason is what's already stated, the price will drop eventually. This gives someone like me who will sit back for 3 years (or however long it takes) for the price to correct itself and become reasonable.

Personally I think the introduction of nano aquariums attributes to the rising costs. There is not much room and people want the best they can get for their space. Atleast that is how it is with me...

Yeah but if they never said it was a hitch hiker would you care then? If its a piece you want and is sought after why not? Its hard to find choice corals in my area (Vermont), if they had something that was out of this world id pay for it.

If you dont mind me asking what do you consider to be the "BEST they can get"?

Name brand corals?

I think thats the problem. This hobby is turning live animals into a trendy name brand/designer/fashion like they created it. then they ask ridiculous prices just cause they got lucky and found it.

+a million on this one. Its unreal how a stupid name could up the value of a coral by hundreds of dollars. I purchase corals based on their colors and if I like the look not cause someone calles it some ridiculous name "Pink Panther Thousand $ Acro" because it has a hue of pink in it. This hobby has changed so much in the span of 10 years its crazy. Especially when you get a peak at what these colonies actually cost. some vendors are making the colony + $$$ on 1 small frag its CRAZZZZYYY like this---> :flypig:

What im also finding to be odd is if you happen to post corals up for sale without names no one wants to buy it, or they constantly ask whats that coral called.....Who cares what the name is :faint2:

Sorry about the rant im done now :crossedlips:

+1 +1 +1!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't have paid $150 for it either way. And I don't get the relevance of what's available locally driving online prices through the roof... Especially since the closest lfs to me is 100 miles away.

I really hope nobody blurts out a Vendor name in this thread. We all know how it would then get shut down. Just like before.

From a vendors standpoint who agrees that the name game is about as silly as can be. It turns out for the few purist out there that go on about how silly it is, nobody wants nameless stuff at least nameless acros. And I am treading lightly here when I say this but Even you outspoken purists. Trust me I have tried and failed at selling incredible looking sticks as unnamed or attempted to actually Id them with scientific names. And guess what happened. I didn't sell any of them. Once they hade names no matter how lame it was a different story.

It's a game that as a vendor the market has forced me to play. I can't take it seriously for the life of me but I do have my fun slapping more and more ridicules names on my sticks:)

Here is the deal. This thread is awesome and I am all for you guys talking about this subject. That being said I am asking you to discuss these issues without the use of vendor names or implications of a vendor. If you can't do what I am asking you will be removed from this thread and asked not to post. This thread will stay open. If we have to remove a post from you from this point on you will be asked to not post. Thanks.

If you don't follow the rules you will be the only thing to get shut down. HA! :)

Agree reef mad I hope not they will yank it

Again you will be the one yanked! LOL! Just discuss and have a good time.

BTW the other 3,490 threads on pricing are still on the forums and not shut down or yanked. ;)

You should name the next one "slapstick acro" haha

I definitely agree that people love names to their sticks or coral. Battlecoral, I give you the BIGGEST exception because you offer white lighting which others are scared to touch. I respect you for that!

I agree. The only reason I could see the names to matter is for unique behavior for that particular coral. A beautiful coral is a beautiful coral no matter the name IMO and that's what I look at plus it's needs. I also refuse to pay crazy prices for ANY coral.

Not to go totally off the deep end, but supply and demand is one part. Your dollar is physically worth less as well. Things cost more than they used to. Just look at gas :) As the price climbs due to inflation and people continue to pay more, the oil companies push the limit until people stop buying. Stop supporting the over priced corals and the prices will come down. Or keep paying a lot and be happy :) Either way, its your money.
