I have experimented with a number of adhesives for fixing corals whilst submerged in the reef tank. Unfortunately I am still unable to find a truly reliable and simple method of submerged adhesion.

My current choice is still the use of Superglue Gel (cyanoacrylate). Although effective, the procedure is still rather hit and miss and requires careful application.

May I first point out, I am not a chemist, either amature or qualified, but I am an engineer.

One of the consequences of having a slant towards engineering, is a driving ambition to find answers to even the simplest of problems. Engineers will not be defeated, even if it means creating some sort of heath robinson creation, that only partly solves the problem. Usually followed by the response"that will do it" ha ha.

My intrigue, recently formed a blank look on my dentist face, when I asked for the property details of the glue used to affix my daughters tooth brace, and whether it may be suitable for marine aquarium use.

During my recent research of the internet , following a browse of Ebay for second hand Tank Equipment (just being honest) I came across this abstract by M. Jane Brennan a, Bridget F. Kilbride a, Jonathan J. Wilker b, c, Julie C. Liu a, d, A bioinspired elastin-based protein for a cytocompatible underwater adhesive.

I found it particularly interesting due to the link with sandcastle worms and mussels ......

" researchers have been inspired by natural glues. Specifically, underwater application and bonding has been demonstrated with materials based on organisms such as sandcastle worms and mussels"

Here is a link to full article, including the abstract.

Obviously this is still under research and development, but I would like to know if any of the Reefer Chemists have an opinion as to whether this may be of interest to the hobby.

Hope I am not asking the obvious, but if there is one thing I have learnt in Life, its ¬If you don`t` know, ask`, unless you are in the armed forces of course, in which case I found its best to, just shut up and do as you are told, ha ha.

Could not make up my mind which section to post this under, so I hope it's suitable for this Forum.

Thanks in advance,
Best wishes from over the pond,

While the complex newer possible adhesives mimicing natural glues can be quite effective (I worked for an adhesive company decades ago and we based ideas off them too), I don't think any are commercialized, and I've not heard of any particular problem using reasonable levels of epoxies or cyanoacrylates.

So I'd categorize it as interesting, certainly, but maybe not ready for reefing. :)
