Last night my a/c went out around 8pm. So I put fans on the tank and put some frozen bags of ice periodicaly through the night. (didnt sleep much) The temps got up to 83 but got down to 81 with Ice. So this morning my house got up to 87! Tank was up to 84 and put more ice and more fans surrounding the tank plus one on top. But now I am very concerned because the fish are all breathing rapidly and the new carpet anemone I just got a few days ago is stressed and mouth is open. The ac is fixed now and temp is slowly going down in house(now 84) Tank is at 81-82. Is there anything I can do? I have checked all my params and all are good which is a good sign right? None are gasping at the top of the tank which is good as well right. Did I do everything I could? besides avoiding this with maybe a purchase of a chiller for next time. :( Thanks All!!

Put in some airstones, and do anything you can to help aerate the water. When the temperature of water goes up, there is less dissolved oxygen available.

I need some reassurance that everything will be ok.......... I am very worried!! Temp is now down to 79 yipppeeee

you should be fine, airstones were the right move, temps can swing that high on a reef for various reasons the diffrence is they have waves to get O2 into the water. Prolonged 84* would be bad but since it is heading down I wouldn't worry.

Remember taking the temp from 84 to 79 quickly is every bit as stressful as vice versa. If this had happened to me I would have taken the temp down more slowly than you did.

a slow and steady reversal is what you need. dont do it all at once. also, make sure you have all lighting off and only essential pumps.

This is all very good advice but I am surprised you had such adverse affects at 84 degrees. That really surprises me. I run my tank up to 83 with no worries.

It sounds like the tank temp went up much higher, do you know how accurate your thermometer is?

I took the temp several times with many different instruments including the thermometer in the tank. I usally keep tank at 78-79 so up to 84 they were stressed out. They are all much much better today. Thankfully!! Even new carpet is much better and settled in! Im so relieved! Thanks everyone for your help!!
