We have a RS 425XL, so it is an 88 gallon display tank, roughly 47x22x23.

When we set the tank up last June we elected to go with the WAV Starter kit. Without getting off track, we are running an Apex along with a number of other modules, so the integration with the controller, the ability to direct the flow, and the price, all led to the decision to go this route. I positioned the pumps on opposite ends of the tank angled slightly at the surface and directed at the opposite corners.

Overall, no complaints. These pumps kick out a ton of flow. A ton. You turn one of these guys on 100% and the tank is a whipping whirlpool. For the first 6 months or so I ran a program where both pumps were on 24/7 and the intensity and operational mode varied in order to ramp up and down throughout the day. With the program for each pump capped at maybe 50% the Apex showed the flo varying from maybe 4.5 to 5.7 throughout the ramp cycle.

As fish were added to the tank, along with some LPS corals, I noticed that the flow with that program was just too much. Fish were swimming pretty hard, and while they were were not getting direct flow, my Frogspawn and Hammer were not thrilled with the flo up at 5.7. So I dialed it back. Now I have the pumps set up to mainly run one at a time. I moved the intensity down to a max of maybe 10%. The left runs at 1% overnight then ramps up to 10 by 10:00. Then the right pump kicks on at 1% and they both run for maybe an hour before the left turns off and the right ramps up to 10% ish. This revised program still seems like a pretty good amount of flow. Most of the day the Apex shows a flo of 3.3, then when both pumps are on it is up around 4.8. This surprised me a little. Previously with both pumps on maverick at say 40% they were hitting flo at 5.5. I thought having both set at a constant 7% would result in less than 4.8... Anyway, the fish can hang and chill a little bit more, the FS and hammer look a little more relaxed, and are they starting to open back up more.

Questions... Does anyone have any experience or tips to share to manage good flow with the WAVs? How does the intensity set work when selecting a mode like Rincon or Maverick? Does anyone run an inverse mode to alternate pumps? I am running a constant mode now to limit the max to 10%. Can you still limit the max while using Pulse, or Malibu? Any advice for LPS?

Thank you. I appreciate your feedback and input.

I have mine in maverick at 18% which is mellow
Pulse mode may also be good
