Here's the issue with api, it reads 0 but a good test kit would tell us the difference between 0.00 and 0.04 which would be fine. Both would read zero on api and thus not give us valuable information.

Do they go away at night and seam to be at their worst just before lights out?

You can try getting a tiger or fighting conch, they'll hang out in/on the sandbed and love to eat diatoms. Plus they're extremely cool little guys to have in an aquarium ;Happy
