What do filter sock do?

So this may be a dumb question. I purchased a Cobalt C Vue 40 gallon tank and it comes with two filter socks. I have always been used to media baskets like the ones I have on my Fluval 13.5 gallon tank. I was going to buy the media baskets for the 40 gallon but wanted to see if keeping the socks is better then that. My question is what goes in the filter sock. What is the normal function of them. I know this may be giving a few people a god chuckle but like I said it’s completely new function to me and don’t want to use it the wrong way.

Filter socks are there to take the place of filter floss. they trap the detritus and gunk.

Some do put bags of media inside them as it’s wasted space, but I think that’s not a good idea as your media is than dealing with dirty water before it’s been filtered by the sock...filter floss does the same job, takes up less room and is easier to replace than clean a filter sock.

If I were to use something like that it'd be 1 micron socks, switched out every few days. I stopped using mechanical filtration years ago and my corals seem quite happy because if it. It's also a PIA to be cleaning/changing/washing,etc all the time.

Filter socks are a form of mechanical filtration. There are a few choices but as stated you are going to have to change or clean socks or a filter floss every few days. Some people choose to let the skimmer do this job so they don’t have to bother.
