I have been using pot scrubbies for my filters, now I would like to switch and use this, its an a/c filter, do you think it will work.

What is the purpose of the filtration media and what other filtration do you have in place? I have used that type of AC filter material in various freshwater filter applications and they make a reasonable mechanical filtration media to remove coarse detritus from the water column, but IME aren't particularly effective for fine filtration (e.g., filter socks) or for biological filtration.

I just want to use it for the beneficial bacteria to grow, like in place of lava rock or biohome.

IMO it will not be nearly as effective as lava rock will be for biological filtration.

Ok, well you are the expert with the experience, so lava rock it is, i can get that here, this site is beyond awesome, you guys are super quick to help, and not like others i have been on that tell you to go search or give a link, thanks a million for your help.

For a DIY pond filter I used that type of blue pad over the lava rock where the blue pad worked as the mechanical filtration and the lava rock worked as the biological filtration. Good luck!

Ineffective and if filter is NOT waterproof, you will have filaments into your return pump and within tank
Go will poly pad for aquarium online or at pet stores

If you're interested, this article addresses the relative effectiveness of various filter media for biological filtration. While the analysis was performed using freshwater aquariums, the underlying chemistry to biologically convert ammonia to nitrite to nitrate using autotrophic bacteria would be essentially the same for salt and fresh. I'm using the 30 ppi foam in sumps for both salt and freshwater tanks I have.

You'll also notice that the author believes over filtration with foam media will provide a home for surface heterotrophic bacteria which will eat heterotrophic bacteria in the water column and result in visually clearer water.
