I was hoping someone could tell me if this is diatoms or some other type of algae. It started out as a brown dusting all over the rocks and sand that I thought was just the normal diatoms but has since turned into a hairy algae in the last two days. I can brush it off and siphon it out and by the next day it’s back and seems to be more than where I removed it. Any help would be appreciated and if it’s just part of the normal new tank syndrome then I will just let it be but I never had diatoms that looked like this.

Yes it was. It was rock from my old reef tank from 18 years ago. Was sitting in a rubber maid tote in my shed until I used it for this tank.

Okay, that's a long time! Was the tote covered?

Is say it's leaching out some of that old locked up nutrients. I cant ID what type of algae it is, doesn't look like GHA.

what's your water pramameters like?

Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 5ppm
Salinity 1.025
Alkalinity 10dkh
Temp. 78

I haven’t measured calcium or magnesium yet as I don’t see a need but I’m waiting for a new phosphate test kit as mine is out of regeant so I don’t know where that is yet. I have not feed the tank anything yet as there is no fish but I did feed one feeding of reef roids last week.

What about P04?

Ime cyano is a phosphate and detritus hog. Since you have live stock. Rather long method, but hae had luck with siphoning what i can and using a phosphate removal media to remove the food.(it will grow back faster than you can manually remove just trying to limit unlocking more nutrients when that dies)
I like phosgaurd for these type of jobs(just rinse well first). Faster acting than gfo and works in a media bag. Change out the bag every 3 days or so till see a change in alage growth rate.

Seems to look very similar and from what I’ve read could be what I have. Now the million dollar question is how do I get rid of it. I have read that some use H2O2 but don’t want to go that route yet. I have used H2O2 on my planted tank before to kill spots of BBA and it definitely works but have not done this on a reef tank with corals.

I would not use h202 on cyano, unlikely to make a dent tbh would be like putting out a fire with water pistol. Cyano only real method is curtailing the conditions that brought it about. Other methods are stop gaps. There are removers and blackouts, but if the conditions are the same when they finish it will come back.

I have some Phosguard that I could put in a media bag but was worried about stripping the phosphate without knowing what the actual measurements were. I may just try it for a few days and watch the few little frags that are in the tank.

When its starts dying it will become darker in color And start coming off in clumps that will lead to round 2 of cleaning(power heads [emoji23])

I don’t mind cleaning the power heads as long as this crap is gone. I thought I did a good job of siphoning it out before I did a water change only to look into the tank the next day to see even more of this stuff. I will give the phosguard a try and keep siphoning it out and hopefully it will run its course. I have seen many different types of algae between salt and freshwater tanks and this crap is a new one to me. Like I have always said no matter how much you think you know when it comes to this hobby there is so much more to learn.

When I scrape it off the glass, it swirls around and reattached itself to the existing strands on the rock or sand.

This is exactly what I think is happening with mine. I tried to brush it off and siphon it out before I did my water change and by the next day you couldn’t even tell that I cleaned any out. I hope it doesn’t smother out any of my zoas and I have been trying to keep them clean by blowing it off around them but at this rate I may have to hire someone to constantly blow it off every hour.
