what is this

I have been looking at this for about 3 weeks trying to decide if I wanted it then my daughter decided to buy it but the wholesale dealer it was bought from did not know what it is . It is hard which was a suprise because it looks kind of like a sponge or a leather to me . I like it because it is so diffrent but really need to know how to take care of it properly.

look to see if it has any pores or holes. if it does its a sponge and continue treating your tank the same way you have been, it shows a sign of a healthy matured tank.

Might be a sponge or a bleached coral. Given it might be a sponge, NEVER expose it to air. It will get air trapped in its pores, which will kill off parts of it if not the entire thing.

Thats whar i tgiught by looking at it in the tank but when i got it home it is hard and it has no pores

the sponge my friend has only has one large pore showin at the end of a tube like thing the only reason he found it was a sponge was when a peice of live rock fell on it and cracked the shell it was in i believe the shell is made of hardened calcium the the sponge expelled

not all sponges are the soft squishy things we think them to be every animal has a defense this is just one of the most uncommon in sponge species i will do some more research for you to find out what exactly your dealing with
