I have a 90g system with a trigger systems 36 sump. Currently I'm using a mag 12 pump, but its loud, hot, and often doesn't want to restart after a water change. I'm thinking Eheim but which one, the 1260 or 1262?

I have a rio 26 HF hyper flow 1590 gph in my tank and that works perfect for me. A little loud though but im used it already

You can't go wrong with either Eheim you have posted but I would go with the 1262 and you can always put a ball valve in to dial back flow if needed......Eheim will be super quiet and transfer minimal heat as compared to your current mag 12 and last longer.

A new impeller may be in order for the Mag 12 - take a good look into the impeller well with a strong flashlight to look for damage or buildup too. Might be easier to see if it's thoroughly dried first. Honestly, if none of the above, it sounds like a cracked impeller or maybe a swollen/scratched magnet. I wouldn't count the Mag 12 out just yet.

If you're willing to deal with the heat issue by switching to a smaller pump/less flow you could probably get away with running a Mag 7 or 9.5 just as well as a 1262. (Depending somewhat on your plumbing.)

Even ball-valving the Mag 12 down to Mag 7 performance levels should make it use less power/run cooler if you don't necessarily want to spend on a new pump. ~400 gph of actual throughput should do the job.

The 1262 should deliver performance somewhere between the Mag 7 and 9.5 FWIW.

None of these pumps should be audible unless you're listening right next to it.
