Which return pump to use

Royal Exclusive RD3 80w!

Ran externals, very successfully for 15+ years, Blueline/PanWorld/Iwaki pumps. And was extremely pleased.

With that said, I just did a complete sump upgrade and it came with a RE RD3 230w and all I can say is WOW. Literally dead silent. I do not think I ever go back to a traditional pump. DC pump either Abyzz of RE and NEVER look back.

Reading the instructions it says you can put a valve in the line to reduce flow. It also says by reducing the flow requires less watts which is easier on the motor.

That is true for most centrifugal AC pumps. I wish aquarium pump manufactures would publish full pump curves like industrial pump manufactures do that includes power curves.

Heck... If money is no object, I would go for the Abyzz pumps. Iirc, I think they have a 10yr warranty and are German engineered. They're over $1K per pump, so 2 for redundancy sake may not be applicable. Also depends if you want to run a pump on each return, or split the output.

I will never go back to ac pumps because the controllability is awesome.

Whichever dc pump you go with, make sure it's oversized. It seems these pumps die faster when run full blast. Mileage varies between manufacturers, but that's the general consensus.

Really, you're better off with two pumps. Also, if you want extra flow in display, and penductors / eductors. I think it's AquaSD that has new style that somehow also create a random flow.
