Zoa ID

There shouldn’t be such a thing as high priced Zoa’s they grow like weeds
I’m agreed, to a degree. I think $150ish should be the upper limit for a single polyp. I have never paid more than that and I’d be terrified to do so. Zoas are weird and sometimes things start going south for seemingly no reason :( it’s scary
Agreed with @footgal on this one... once you get to some of the highest end ones, or even if you deal with a zoa dominated you learn they’re not all weeds lol and there’s a reason a GMK is worth over 400$ a polyp it’s because there is a big possibility it’ll melt on you lol but I agree I wish they wouldn’t charge 400$+ for zoanthids it’s outrageous, especially when you’re trying to catch them all lol

Glad someone understands what I’m getting at! I don’t see myself ever charging more than $150 for any zoa, but especially not a single polyp. Even cutting singles freaks me out because they have a high risk of melting. As my collection grows, I understand why some are more expensive than others but I won’t ever understand why $400 a polyp is even tolerated. I feel like coral is just getting more and more unaffordable which is really upsetting for someone just getting into the hobby and isn’t made of cash.

Yup totally lol luckily there are people who do spend that money and resell things at lower values, I’ve gotten a few 200-400$ zoanthids over the years for far less and or through trades... unfortunately stores are harder to trade with lol but I won’t buy it if it’s unreasonable... but that’s awesome sounds like you have quite the collection ! Hopefully we get to trade one day!

I hope we do! I’m trying to make it a regular thing to trade instead of buy/sell because it just makes everything so much easier. No more dealing with paypal and venmo, just these frags for those frags and I don’t have to go hunting for the frags I want and stuff like that. I love trading :)

Are there any right now that you are seeking out?

For real! It’s just easier although sometimes I wish my highend stuff would grow faster not many people want to trade for mid to low grade hahaha

I think because the low-end stuff is more accessible. I'm a big advocate of getting some high-end stuff, growing it out and giving some to my LFS to sell (for store credit) so that I can get other things. I'm hoping that enough propagation of some of the higher end stuff will lower the cost.

This is true! I’m drowning in radioactive dragon eyes (even though they morphed pink in my tank) and pinwheel Fire and ice

I’ve got a VERY extensive list. I’m in the middle of setting up what’s gonna end up being a 45 gallon zoa dominant lagoon :)
Yessss girl! I love that!

Zoas are my favorite corals. I'm constantly finding different ones I want. Right now thinking about setting up a more zoa dominated system with just storm clowns.

One of the more frustrating aspects of weird zoas are the ones that change colors....and then leaves me like "ok...now what are you?" For example, a bit ago, you commented on a post of mine about some beautiful zoas I got (profile picture) and I think we agreed that they were probably solar circus.....but then, one of the polyps now looks like a stratosphere??? No idea what's going on with that.

I have a 50 gallon lagoon, zoa dominant you’re gonna love it lol

yeah I try to do that too it just depends what the store will give me for them some stores don’t value them like they should... a store tried to give me like 5$ per polyp on a few things that retailed at about 60$-80$ per polyp I was like naw I’m good... but most of the time I can make enough to keep the hobby going which is sweet (:

A lot of the time, baby zoas look different than the fully mature zoa. You gotta look at the oldest zoa to have for a proper ID :D

I live in LA, so most coral stores around here are pretty knowledgeable about stuff, but obviously they don't know every single name of every single zoa that people ask them about, so they wont know the value.

Psst... trade with me ;) I’ve got a couple exclusives, like I went and ordered some wild colonies and did DAYS of research to make sure someone else didn’t already name them. As far as I know, the only person with these are me :). Here’s one of my favorite self-named zoas. Meet Eye of Cthulhu

(Apologize for the last one- I gave it to CaliKid Corals and they have been holding onto it for me. He shined a light on it, and that was the pic I took)

@Renescence lol I don’t believe I have full tank shots but I like to take pictures of my zoas the best ones are on my reefing Instagram @flowering_reefs lol I’ll post a few here though for sure !

@footgal hahah you don’t want my tank, you might want what’s inside it but it’s an innovative marine 50 lagoon, literally pain in the butt hahaha looking to upgrade to a 70+ lagoon after college (: and upping the collection, about to get in some, krak godz, awesome blossoms, toucan Sam’s, and shazams, that’ll be it for a long while unfortunately my systems are at their limits with zoas

I meant zoas! I’m super excited about my new build, a lot of room compared to my 20 gallon! I’m on the lookout for new zoas

lol no no it’s okay I got my answer feel free to take over ! So like basically I believe they’re morphing and adapting to your lighting, very common with wild zoanthids, but they are honestly looking freaking dope and I must trade or buy some from you after you are able to frag them lol

also you’re super lucky! I have been waiting to get stuff from Cali kid coral! I want their golden leopard zoas, and a maui wowie mushroom lol can’t justify the prices though lol
