I’m on team live rock but do you HAVE to, no. Live rock gives many benefits plus you get an instant cycle.

Live rock will have all the beneficial bacteria on it to handle ammonia conversion. Dry rock has zero and will have to be added and you will need to wait until enough is built up to complete the cycle.

I’m sure they do but I wouldn’t know I’ve never used anything but live rock.
