Stability and Consistency of a Reef Tank One of the benefits I have found of writing so much is that when I am putting together an article I always learn something. When I did the articles on the master’s tanks I learned a great deal, as I hoped I would. One of the most important things I learned from these individuals is that all of them believe that stability is one of the keys to their success. Most of them not only keep the parameters of their tanks very stable, but they also are not...

This article is sponsored by Behind the Scenes at Sheltered Reef Aquaculture – Article 1 Introduction Since opening our business and launching our website, the number one area we have received comments and questions on has been our photography. All of the comments have been positive and most of the questions are in the “how do you do it” category. Among the many principals our company was founded on is complete transparency of what we do and how we do it. To us the most important...

This article is sponsored by Battlecorals Sometimes it's really all about the silver linings. I mean, I'm not the worlds most emboldened optimist - trust me, but in the wake of a devastating circumstance, I think if we can find just one flake of positivity, then at least we can't consider it a 100% failure. I have often considered the “first crash” an essential rite of passage in every reefers journey. Whether by malfunction, equipment failure, direct human error, the result of pests...

In our previous article in this Your Guide to Aquarium Photography series, we examined some photography basics. In this article, we'll look specifically at how you should prepare for a photoshoot of your reef. Preparing for a photo shoot a couple of days in advance can make a difference in the quality of the pictures and the amount of post-processing needed. I would start by cleaning the glass a day before, so that the algae film doesn’t add blur to pictures or affect auto focusing. Doing...

Photo by @robert_au Our previous article on Keeping Seahorses in Aquaria focused on how to feed and nourish your ponies. This, our final article in this series, will address how to deal with time away due to travel and also how to handle disease and sickness in your herd. Now that you know what is necessary to feed seahorses, you are probably coming to the realization that perhaps the teenager next door is not the best choice as a fish sitter! This is the aspect of seahorse keeping that...

Tank photography has been and continues to be a challenging topic for many reefers. When I started my tank, I was using an SLR (a non-digital for the newer generation); yes, we used to shoot using film and wait for days to finish the roll and get it developed. I remember taking notes on how each shot was taken (no Exif info was available then) and then keeping the notes to compare with the pictures when the film was processed. I was able to raise my ratio of good shots from 2/36 to 25-30/36...

The Bacterial Infection Predicament Please do not view the information below as a shortcut to quarantine. Use it only in an EMERGENCY SITUATION when treating a fish with parasites/worms PLUS a serious bacterial infection. So, your fish has a nasty bacterial infection. You've treated with antibiotics for 10 days and it's still not looking any better. What gives?! Photo by: ngoodermuth Why fish get bacterial infections - We all know the water in our aquarium is full of bacteria...

Photo by @d2mini In our previous article on Keeping Seahorses in Aquaria, we looked at how to select your ponies and them happy and healthy. In this article, we'll look at another aspect of seahorse keeping your herd happy and healthy—feeding them properly and well. Certainly one way to a seahorse’s heart is through its stomach! This is a time to really enjoy your ponies. As their owner, you get the experience of interacting with them at feeding time. It is an excellent opportunity for...
