In my previous photo tips I've gone over equipment choices and the importance of shooting in raw. The final piece of the puzzle is the software that you use to "develop" your raw images. I prefer to use Adobe Lightroom. Unfortunately Adobe has now moved their software to the cloud in the form of a subscription based service. Although, for whatever reason, you can get the Photoshop and Lightroom bundle for "only" $10/month which may seem like a lot but it's a steal compared to their other...

How and when this hobby started (for me at least) in 1971. I think it was on a Tuesday about two or two fifteen in the afternoon. I know because I was there. Here in New York where I live there used to be a very large aquarium store in Manhattan a couple of blocks from the World Trade Center. I would go there as a kid and buy my fresh water fish. They were the largest store by far so they had all the unusual stuff including sea turtles. A couple of days after I returned from my service in...

I would like to discuss one of my favorite fish, the pipefish. Pipefish to me are so much different from normal fishy looking fish that I can't help but to love them. There are more things different in pipefish than similar to normal looking fish. They are so different that at one time, in the 1800s pipefish were considered to be insects instead of fish. They probably got that idea because they have an external skeleton composed of bony plates instead of scales so when you pick one up...

If you’ve been an aquarist for any amount of time, chances are, you’ve lost a fish. It’s a painful and traumatic experience, especially when an aquarist has worked hard to ensure an exciting species’ survival. Sometimes, fish die with little warning. A Discussion of US and European Reefkeeping I do not consider reefkeeping to be a competitive activity, but during my recent trips to Europe and then travels around the states the most frequently asked questions I got were “Are the states better than us” or “how far ahead of us are the Europeans”. I would love to be able to say definitively that one group of reefers or country or even continent is ahead of another, but from what I have seen that simply is not the case. I say this for...
