I've been a Tampa Bay Saltwater customer for more than a decade now and have started at least half a dozen saltwater reef aquariums using their rock, sand, and clean-up crew. TBS is an amazing asset and resource for hobbyists in the USA. In this article, I hope to offer some insight into their product/service, take you on a little journey, and show you what it’s like to purchase “The Package”. Who is Tampa Bay Saltwater? Tampa Bay Saltwater (TBS) is a small family-run outfit based in...
All of us had that one fish that when we first saw, we immediately fell in love with and were fascinated about. Perhaps that “love at first sight” lead us to learn more about it and even go further to owning one with taking all the challenges of keeping it. To me that fish would be the slender snipe fish, when I first saw it something about it left me totally mesmerised. Hence I thought it would be selfish of me to not share this beauty with everyone. The slender snipe fish are distantly...
As many of you may know, I love my gobies but Discordipinna griessingeri has got to be my favourite. And I'm sure if you have ever kept or read about this species you will enjoy it. Now, let's cover the first question that may spark up... What is this? So far all I've mentioned is "Discordipinna griessingeri" and nothing else. The genus discordipinna is a small genus part of the subfamily Gobiinae. Gobiinae, often known as the "True Gobies", are found in all Oceans and some lakes and rivers...
One of the best parts about the reefing hobby is collecting your favorite corals and watching them grow from small frags into colonies. Each reefer has the potential to grow corals and share their frags with others. That's the essence of the reefing hobby. Here at POTO, we are grateful to be able to do it on a large scale. This article focuses on the genus Acropora, as it is the most coveted and demanding coral in the reefing hobby. Corals lack the meaningful features commonly associated...
When I first utilized Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) in coral experiments in 2001, I never envisioned how these lights would revolutionize the aquarium hobby. The advantages of LEDs are many, including long life, relatively low heat generation, dimming capability, spectral tuning, potential low energy consumption, and so on. There are many LED luminaires on the market today, with spectral qualities tuned for freshwater and marine environments. For many, these lights have become the luminaire...
Neptune Systems has offered sophisticated SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) devices along with analyzers, pumps, ATOs, and others for many years. Although many lighting systems made by others could be controlled by the Apex, only recently has this company offered its own LED luminaire. This article will examine the SKY LED light. Years ago, LEDs (light-emitting diodes) were regulated to lowly positions, such as on/off indicators on coffee makers. Technological advances have...
Aquariums - as good for our well being and state of mind as they are for the millions of creatures that inhabit it's seemingly small, and at the same time, unendingly vast and bountiful landscape. To us giants, we see the glass box with rocks, and coral, and it's torrents of water swishing about; however, those who live within the contents know it's lush fields of green and red plant life - rolling rocky hills and cliff faces perched above an undersea beach. To each and every inhabitant, the...
In many of the threads on lighting between LED's and MH's. I see allot of comments stating that there is not very much savings in going from MH to LED"s. This is what inspired me to start this article. Just a little back ground. I have been reefing for a long time. When I first started, I was using Power Compacts. Not even sure they even make them any more. LOL. Then I moved to MH's, and there was basically only 6500K bulbs at that time. As they became more popular, more and more MH bulbs...
Note from the Editor: David Kimutai (@Davidangelfish) had the good fortune to connect with a major livestock supplier based in Africa for the marine aquarium trade. Below is David's interview with Kenya Tropical Sealife LTD, and all photos included in the article are courtesy of René Jorgensen and Kenya Tropical Sealife LTD, ©2019, All Rights Reserved. Reef2Reef is very grateful for the opportunity to hear from René Jorgensen and for his giving us an inside look at how his business...
Introduction: When we think of public aquariums, we usually think of someplace interesting and educational, a destination to take your kids for an afternoon. However, more and more, public aquariums are contributing to the scientific knowledge base. They are often affiliated with institutions of higher learning, and older ones typically have larger endowments which contribute to larger research budgets. Today, many of the peer-reviewed studies on conservation of both freshwater and marine...
