I really do appreciate all the help and brainstorming.
A fuge is definitely the route I want to go.
The hob version is so cool.

Pumps are an easy swap. One that small would be cheap. Especially 2nd hand.

Would a tumbler eliminate the need to skim? Or could you go nano sized skimmer? Food for thought.

Ah yes I have seen those they would be handy I think.

So apologies up front but here goes.
With some diligent and hour long research I believe I have been short cycling my algae scrubber the entire time.
With some elbow grease and 2-3 gallons of water on the floor I have now reconfigured my sump.
Alas I wanted the cheato tumbler madly, making sorrowful faces to all I encountered, but I'm going to give the scrubber a couple more weeks now that it's configured properly.
I'm such an idiot.
This is the way the sump looks now.

I can actually pour water in it.
I really do feel like a dummy but you are never done learning no matter how long you do this.
