I forgot to add, I drilled a small hole just above the running water level for a siphon break on the return piping since my return PVC runs to the bottom of the tank.

On my new tank I can't - it's internal and drilled. What I did here is designed a anti-siphon loop into the return nozzles.

This is a bad picture but each of the Loc-Line tubes has a point that is above the top of the return Tee inside the overflow there. Additionally, each of the segments (3 in total) terminates in a VCA RFG nozzle and each of those has siphon breaks built in so that when my return pump shuts off the water drains to the bottom of the overflow weir and stops.
 
Not a hobby, but I like wood working. Mine, but I used recycled doors.
