Did your montis make it or did they turn white?

They seem to be doing OK they haven't turned white.

Good morning everyone! Do you guys turn off your pumps when feeding? I feel like a lot of the food is getting pushed/sucked into the overflow even I fed my fish.

Yes. I put system into feed-mode. Turns off pumps and gyres for for 10 minutes. Then gyres come on for 5 minutes, stirring everything up that’s on sandbed, creates an additional feeding response, and then everything comes back on.

If I didn’t have a controller with that feature, I would just turn off pumps and gyres for for 10 minutes manually

I think I will try the extra powerheads first since a little more flow would probably be a good thing if that doesn't help then I will try turning the pump off.

That's a big tank to flow. Adding a little more flow will be a win/win.

To clarify my feed-mode choice: My new fish, the Mel and Tang get scared during feeding and go back and forth hiding and coming back out to feed. I found when I turn everything off they relax and eat better. Also, the big chunks of food that they love get diced into dust when wave makers are on.

Also,, I feed heavy and it literally just goes all in overflow if at least the pumps aren’t off - huge waste of money for me.

As these two get more confident and I add more fish, I’m going to leave just one gyre on during feeding for more active feeding response and stirring up sandbed food.

Everyone has a different style of feeding- I watched so many videos on reefers and vendors on HOW to feed. It got overwhelming; so I combined some methods based on my current personalities in the tank.

Also, human nature to nourish others is built into our DNA and also within our different ethnic cultures. So it becomes a very personal thing the way we feed our pets. I don’t think there is a wrong way, so enjoy it!

All the top coral companies who do informational videos in the last 12 months have now put it as the TOP reason for success. And the videos are in-depth on all the different reasons this is so. It was eye-opening!

If I could, I would get the new Maxspect Clouds! Game changer on multi- directional flow! I’ll Keep on the lookout for contests/big sales for you.

I just can’t justify replacing my 5 months old RS ones that are completely sufficient for my tank size and type of corals.

My wave maker has a feed mode that turns it off for 10 minutes. I leave my return pump on.

All the top coral companies who do informational videos in the last 12 months have now put it as the TOP reason for success. And the videos are in-depth on all the different reasons this is so. It was eye-opening!

I’ll send in a bit. And agree; the more you know the easier it is to adjust or use something new in this hobby. Especially when the “experts” are doing the same and the good ones admit it

Sorry guys, I slept in a minute or 33...

I turn off the return when I'm feeding corals, I rarely turn off powerheads. I use two auto feeders because of some hungry and finicky fishes. One feeds into a feeding tube that forces the food to drop off the surface before it leaves the cone of safety. The other one is flakes and it feeds close to a powerhead but it gets pulled into the vortex of surface agitation before it gets to the overflow and the majority of the food falls off the surface into the tank. Some inevitably goes into the sump but it's very rare my fish miss much.

I should add, I don't turn off anything for feeding the fish, just the return for the corals because I broadcast feed and I want it in the tank for a good 15-20 minutes before it can get to the sump.

Note to self: when u worked two days at LFS and then watched the grand babies a few days later; this causes two things:

A) you literally eat dinner like an HS linebacker, crash with cookie in hand by 8:30pm and THEN wake up at 3am all perky wondering if fish want to wake up and play

B) Since no human nor animal is available, you decide to write novels on R2R while chowing on cereal instead of just going back to bed like a mature human. And wait for 7am because you think that’s the “appropriate” time to have a cup of coffee…
