IME they will move toward the upper part of your glass (for flow I suspect) so when you do a water change, drop the water line below that. Razor, paper towel them off. I only use white paper towels.

As it is right now whatever it is, is about half way down some are almost at the sand level in the tank so I would have to remove a lot of water to get to it.

As it is right now whatever it is, is about half way down sobre are almost at the sand level in the tank so you would have to remove a lot of water to get to it.

If you do at least a 45% water change, you can get most of it still,under water, the rest that aren’t won’t matter if they are cause you removed everything and did water change. (hope that sentence makes sense). Gives u an opportunity to clean all the schmutz, everywhere. Start fresh and then see what starts to grow back.
