Iv been dosing nitrate but can only maintain .01 pmm . Is a stable .01 pmm nitrate adequate rather than pushing for 2.0 ppm nitrate?

How much are you dosing?

Assuming a reasonable dose, it is likely a fine amount. The level is not likely stable at 0.01 ppm. It boosts and steadily drops till you measure. If you are boosting to 1 ppm, then the average level might be something like 0.5 ppm. :)

That said, I'm 100% certain you can dose enough to attain any nitrate level you want. :)

I have been dosing as much as 30ml of 473m of D.I. water and 2 teaspoons of stump remover in a 100 gallon total volume tank. After one hour I get a reading of .02 and one day later 0. My SPS corals are not light colored and have increased growth. I lowered the light cycle on my fuge 16 hours to 13 and started dosing 10 ml. I also removed a basketball size hunk of cheato from a very full fuge. I now get .01pmm reading.
According to James planted tank calculator, dosing 30 ml should raise nitrates 1.23 ppm . I never get that reading.

So if you're trying to raise NO3, why are you growing Chaeto? Just wondering if you have a reasonable explanation.

Myka,
I am using the Triton method and growing cheato has reduced my No3 from 30 ppm to .01 and the Po4 from over .1 ppm to .03
Growing cheato keeps my Po4 where I want it. Potassium nitrate is much cheaper than GFO.

+1. Plus, with GFO, you have to worry about driving your phosphates too low. Not so with chaeto. If you run out of phosphates for the chaeto to use, it just stops growing for a bit. As soon as some phosphates show up again, it starts growing. No fiddling with the amount of GFO, no taking the reactor offline for a bit because phosphates are too low, etc.

That's a great reason. I do the same in some client tanks, except I prefer biopellets over Chaeto.
