I don't let mine fluctuate any more than .2 although I don't see any issues with 1.5.

how and what do you test with?

Im using 4 different units..a hanna hand held...coralife digi..lol..a Raytek laser temp reader..and a thermometer..theres about a .4 deviation between these three units..I would like to eliminate my chiller...I have essentially..for the past two months without any adverse effects..Just kinda curious to hear from the high end collectors..my collection is mainly high end..not to sound pretentious!!

IMO/E, 1.5* isn't enough swing.

All of my tanks swing b/t 75-85 depending on the time of day/year. The swings are the greatest during the fall/spring seasons when I have the widows open more often.

Remember, if your tank inhabitants are used to swings, a swing that is stays within their normal range (( +/- 5* on average )) you will be fine. Heck, on the reefs the temps can drop drastically within minutes.

If you are worried about "high end" inhabitants --- A red S. haddoni and an Centropyge deborae -- only aware of 3 of them in the States, have been fine with my swings.

Huh..valid points! -I like where this is going..

Also, a lot of the info that I have gained on this subject has come from a well respected hobbyist who does these type of studies for a living*

* --- not 100% sure if for a living or doing this for a university

My tank goes through about a 5 degree swing sometimes depending on the weather. Sps, clams, lps, and fish are all fine and Ive had them over 3 years.

NICE!! Yeh my tank is mixed reef..sps lps and some softies..my A. Hoeksemai is one I was a bit concerned about..but its doing just fine!

my tank temps run between 72-77 depending on time of year and what i keep the air set to. The tank with halide has maybe a 3 degree swing through the day. Mixed reef mainly sps with a little of everything else.

This time of year my tank is usually 73 in the morning and 79 when the lights go out. In the heat of summer or cold of winter it varies less with the HVAC running a constant temperature. Never noticed any signs of anything being unhappy.

Mine swings 2 to 3 degrees. Have never sign any issues with fish or coral but as previously stated this happens in natural environment

Totally agree, swings aren't horrible if the tank is used to them. They will learn to tolerate many variables, and some can actually help the inhabitants as well. My 180 stays pretty constant now, but I used to swing temps 5 degrees daily on purpose and it was fine, I used to program in random days of no light as well and never had any issues. I stopped doing all that just because it seemed most of the days w/o light fell on the days I had off work so I just worked everything slowly back to "stable" lol

Wifes 12g temp is hard to maintain especially on these hotter days, so it hasn't been intentional but it has been swinging from 76.1(normal temp I run it at) up to 82.9 w/o problem so far.

Ummm, you got pics of that deborae right? :)

I have two degree swings on average and haven't seen damage to my corals from the change. I Would like to get Down to one degree our less though; stability is success
