1 clown died

1 of my clowns died the bigger of the pair he jumped out of my tank, just wondering what I should do, buy a bigger or smaller clown now?

Smaller. You always add a smaller one compared to the one you have left when trying to make a new pair.

The larger of the pair are always the females.

First, I would buy a lid. Statistics would argue, and if you are trying to end up with a breeding pair, to load up with a couple more to hedge your bet. If all you want is 2 clown's then one the same size or smaller should be okay, and minimize any fights, they will sometimes work out who ends up as who later. Also tank size etc. all play in the decision.
