March 13th will be my 1 year anniversary in this hobby. It’s been enjoyable, with many ups and downs, lot of money spent, lot of videos watched, and a lot of conversations on this platform. What I’ve learned after one year is, there’s no one size fits all when it comes to this hobby. Sometimes fish die with no explanation, fish people say CANT cohabitate actually do get along fine together. Water changes that people say need to be done once a week, is a lie. As a new aquarist all the information can be quite overwhelming and it seems like if everything isn’t perfect your tank will fail. I found in this first year trial and error has seemed to be my best friend. You don’t have to have all the best equipment and I’ve found what seems to be the second cardinal sin amongst aquarist in here especially, that canister filters are not nitrate factories. They’re quiet and do a great job. YouTubers also can attest to this and others who “took that brave leap.” One of the biggest controversial topics is/was QUARANTINING new fish. From post on here not getting ich or any disease in your tank. Ich is NOT a death sentence. It just seems to be the most popular. I’ve overreacted and panicked when it came to ich due to what people have said. Back to QT. I’ve read in here that people even after QT still get ich, and some people don’t, I’ve seen post where people have gone fallow and still ich came back smh. I now QT my fish I guess just to decrease the chances of either one of my tanks getting a disease. I’ve gone from using tap water to getting an RO buddie. Not essential but whatever. I’ve got a 44G brute can to store water when I feel like it. One of the best things I could’ve invested in was a water pump and a 20ft hose to get water out of the tank when changing the water. Saves your back. Build your own stand. Saves money and it’ll be more sturdy than the store bought ones. Do your own research, take your own chances. After one year I now have a 75G, 40G and a 20G,Qt Yea so this is the end of my little story/rant. I’ll leave some pics of my first year journey.
