Your Elimi-NP Application & Dosage states the following:

"With a nitrate-phosphate ratio greater than 10:1, we recommend the use of Tropic Marin® NP-Bacto-Balance rather than Tropic Marin® Elimi-NP, to best adjust the nutrient concentrations."

Is this just a straight PPM ratio? For example N = 1.0 P = 0.1, N = 10 P = 1?

So if my N = 8.0 and P = 0.3, NP-Bacto-Balance is the better product to use?

For example, if phosphate (PO4)3- is 0.05 ppm, nitrate NO3- should not exceed 0.5 ppm.

This ratio is only important at low phosphate concentrations below 0.1 ppm.

If my PO4 is 0.3 ppm, the correct product to use regardless of NO3 concentration is Elimi-NP then? Would NP-Bacto-Balance ever be the better product to use when PO4 is > ~0.10 - 0.15ppm?

Hmmmm….. so inquiring minds want to know. Why is this important below 0.1 ppm?

I use NP-BB all the time, when phosphate is above 0.1 or below etc… Should I be reconsidering my usage? The tank looks ok but perhaps I am missing out on something?

@Hans-Werner
If I may ask, if po4 is down to .06 and no3 is at 14, should I switch from ElimaNP to Bacto-Balance?
I'm having a hard time lowering no3 to get in the 10:1 ratio.

The ratio is only important below ca. 0.1 ppm phosphate because at 0.1 ppm phosphate or higher there is always enough phosphate and likely also ammonia to prevent damages by nitrate. Reactive oxygen species produced by nitrate assimilation cause damages in corals only at low phosphate concentrations, see for example Shantz 2016.

NP-Bacto-Balance may also be used above 0.1 ppm phosphate, it is only less efficient in lowering nutrient concentrations than Elimi-NP. If lowering nutrients is not of priority Elimi-NP is still quite effective in controlling nutrients and keeping the nutrients in balance.

My NO3 is 10.1, and my PO4 is 0.24, so my ratio is 42. I'd like to switch to TM products, and get my PO4 closer to 0.05. What TM products should I use, and at which points? Thanks.
