$10 Acros... Do they still exist?

^+1 Great seller as well. I think $25-30 is a reasonable and fair price for a nice, but not spectacular acro frag.. $10 frags are just a thing of the past now. Unless your buying Monti, BN etc..

If 50% of a single Maricultured coral dies and 50% of it lives, that is still a 50% chance of one making it, living in an aquarium, becoming acustomed to the levels we keep in our tank and thriving to eventually produce more of that coral for sale, trade or donation. I know 50% is a small percentage for some but others flip coins all the time... I dont see how you can claim it is a waste or for no reason.
Seems like a waste that could be avoided.

Side note, AQ depot does have 9.99 SPS frags. Considering inflation and overhead that seems like a crazy deal. I've only ever purchased softies from them though.

Not to mention that planning for 50% mortality is wasting wild corals for no reason.

Yea especially since, if you have a tank setup right, the death number on a good or decent order is normally easily counted on one hand.
Americans complain about maricultures because most people here are not used to or were not thought how to select wild coral. Or they dont have the right setup to let them acclimate and start growing. Ask the people who live in countries where cultured or wild is all that's available what their death rate is. Or ask a reputable vendor who sells these corals what their death rate is. Shipping stress kills these corals, not our tanks.

I miss mr coral, I used to go there to pick cheap frags with potential. I still have a few colonies growing from those pieces I got from them, maybe 7 years ago or so.

Also check out fishnreef's website, he has huge packs of corals where all are large pieces and all 10 bucks. All aquacultured corals as well, so mostly average or oldschool stuff that grows well. But there are some goodies in the mix too.

Criticizes "Americans" and praises Mr. Coral in one post. ;Stop

I find that buying from other reefers is the cheapest way. Depends on where u live, luckily im in so cal so there are always reefers selling frags for 10-20 bucks and mini colonies for 20-30 bucks. Just join local reefer forums...

Yeah, that aint happening here.

Years ago, when I first got into SPS, I ordered a 20 frag for $200 from a site called ReeferMadness. No choice in what you got, but that was okay because I didn't really know what I wanted anyway! It was a nice variety with good color right out the bag and best of all the frags were BIG! (multiple branches, 2-3" frags) Sure, some browned out for a bit, but the color always came back and some ended up being stunners! I remember buying another pack when it came time to stock a larger tank I setup, and again had the same experience. Minimal, if any, RTN/STN. (this was about 15 years ago, so I can't remember!)

Then I got out of the hobby for awhile and when I set up a new tank, I went looking for similar "deals". All of a sudden everything had a fancy name, and with it a higher price tag! Reefermadness was no more and I remember buying a frag pack from one site and the frags were very underwhelming 1/2" frags. Disappointing to say the least!

Nowadays, as others have suggested, the best deals seem to come from locals pruning their tanks. I've utilized several locals while stocking my latest project and have easily saved hundreds over buying from LFS or online with shipping. You won't be getting "top of the line" frags, but slimers, birdsnest, stylo's, stags, etc. are easy to come by and look just as good in the tank!

Back in the day when I had my SPS tank up and running I used to order from Mr. Coral. I know they caught a bad rap and I guess were eventually ran out of business but I did it for fun more or less.

You never knew really what you were buying with them, everything came in brown but I would just buy 10 frags for $100, place them in my frag/grow out tank and leave them. Some made it some didnt and the ones that did always colored back up over time. I had quite a collection of odds and ends over time and you really couldnt beat it for the money.

Now days with all these $75 to $100 single frags that are not even grown out but just freshly glued on, does anyone else know of a place where you know the deal is shady but you still cant beat it for 6-10 frags for $100 bucks?
Aquarium Depot they have a lot if cool frags under $10

Being in California, and in the Bay Area specifically, we are kind of spoil and have the option still to buy $10-20 frags at the LFS. One of these stores imports fresh colonies in every 2 weeks or so, but also keeps/carries aquacultured stuff from other local hobbyists and other staples that has been in captivity for awhile. The colonies are kept to their own devices in the tank for ~1 week or so and then most likely they'll get chopped up. The smaller nubs are $10 and the larger frags are in the $20 range. This is for sps only, since the store carries corals up to the $500 price point if you're looking for full colonies.

The owner has been in business for over a decade and grew into the existing space a few years ago. I've frequent the place at both the old location as well as the new one and his care for the corals is one of the better ones for being a brick and mortar joint.

This is one of the aquacultured pieces that I purchased from him in mid April, that's currently in my tank. The original frag was thumbnail size and the mother colony is now over 2 years old. The original owner frags and brings in the pieces to the store for sale as credit. Superman A. hyacinthus approximately 3" around.

Neptune aquatics. San Jose. Best coral selection store I’ve seen in northern CA.

Man, you just brought back some memories. Reefermadness.us was the cream of the crop for premium acros back in the day. They had deal packs like the one you described, but their "Monty's hand-picked" WYSIWYG section was the best the internet had to offer in the early-mid 2000s.

Couple of pieces that I was checking out in the $20 section. As you can see, while he does frag regularly, he doesn't sell everything and the sps has plenty of time to heal, encrust and grow (as in the piece on the right; the left piece is healed).

True but too bad we can't find a house for under a million dollars [emoji12]

The thing that caught my eye most about Neptune, the first time I walked in, was how every tank was immaculate from frag tanks to displays

I’m in Sacramento, where is this? About to take a trip. I have a few local stores but they’re all garbage. Only bought a few pieces and both came with pests
I've found it depends on where you shop. I've found a few that I trust in the Roseville area and haven't had an issue. The stores in Sacramento that I've been to have been rather dodgy.

Neptune aquatics. San Jose. Best coral selection store I’ve seen in northern CA.
Just sold WD to Robert and soon to be his store manager, Frank. We are super spoiled with what SPS he offers there for $10-$20. I got this piece in the $10 section about a year ago.

I dont venture much from LR but I know the Fish Tank people very well.... I dont mind paying $30 or even $40 for a frag from them because I know where they come from. I still cant do more than that. I mean, my budget would allow for much larger purchases but my gut and my logical side says no... about $60 for anything is my top dollar.

$60 will still fetch some pretty flashy stuff.

I have never been to Worlds Under Water even though I have made the trip to Memphis some, this is the first I am hearing of TL reefs.

Worlds Under Water is located in Fayetteville. I stop by there every time I pass thru to chit chat a bit with the guys and buy stuff. They do bring in high end stuff such as equipment, fish and corals. I've seen them with Gem Tangs before. If your looking for really flashy stuff, this is a good place. Many years back, I was coming back from Tulsa and decided to see where they were located. I showed up 30 minutes after closing time and they saw me looking thru the windows and let me in to actually browse around. They are a great group of guys.

TL reefs is fairly new. They showed up around a few years ago. From what I have seen, they have a pretty good stick collection. From your average looking ones to some pretty flashy stuff. He has a lot of rainbow milles that really catch my eyes.

It's a good thing both of them are located pretty far away otherwise my wallet would be empty.

As far as the local club, I used to be a member but it seems most everyone I knew is no longer members. I have asked on their forums about some before to no avail. I dont know where the stick guys went around here. 6 years ago we were everywhere.

Yeah, I haven't seen much of the old stick guys now that you mention it. However, we haven't had a frag swap in Arkansas in years so that's usually how I have met the members. In2Deep use to host Arkansas's only frag swap. Maybe one day we'll have one here in central arkansas but I was hoping for that about 10 years ago.

Always thought about joining but I work a lot of weekends.
