Trying to figure out if the brown coloring on the sand is an algae bloom and how to fix it.

Hit it with a turkey baster and see if it comes back. If it does and it grows, could be algae, diatoms, etc. Pic kinda looks like the dusty fines that collect when I stir my sand bed, but hard to tell from here.

Gotcha, do you have a CUC yet? I would just stir the sand bed and see how fast it springs back.

Welcome to R2R:)

Did you use bio-spira to get it started? I used fritz zyme 9 with mine. Today is day 5 and it says u can start adding fish in it. I waited till day 3 then added 2 fish. So far it's good.

I've been researching CUCs. Any particular species or quantity?

My guess is diatoms. Get a small crew, you won't need much, nassarius are great for the sand, trochus are all around algae eating machines, hermits, some smaller guys like nerite or cerith snails would be good. Do you have any livestock in there at all? +1 on parameters.
