My 10 gal nano I've had setup since November of 2016. Haven't added much to it since. It's simple with a HOB whisper 20 gal filter and blue and white LED lighting. I use tap water (I know bahhhhh) with prime, and it seems fine. And I have one green star polyp.

Welcome!
I'm glad you havent had any issues using tap water.
I know you probably don't have the cash laying around to buy a $200 dollar RODI unit. However, anything you can do to remove the dissolved solids from water is going to help a lot.
You could spend $35 and get a zero water pitcher filter. (which comes with a cheap TDS meter as a bonus)

I was just thinking about using a water filter. I mean I have one from my fridge, thinking about using that water then putting water conditioner through that next time I need to do top off

Is the blue and white LED enough for coral by any chance? I was doing reaserch on it. My GSP hasn't grown since I've gotten it. Just moved it yesterday to a more flow area and more polyps opened that I thought were dead.

Not sure what type of LEDs they are. But if you want to grow corals you're going to have to have stable water parameters and testing equipment, supplements, etc

I'm not really looking to get any difficult ones, pretty much just the green star polyps I have, with maybe some mushrooms, zoas, or xenias
