This is a pic of my 10 gallon toadstool dominant tank. I really love this tank. I hope that this is the beginning of an even larger collection of toadstool leathers. I have been really wanting to get long-polyped ones of any colors.

Here is my minimalistic setup:
  • 1 gallon HOB pump-driven refugium- 80% full of chaeto running on a 16 hour on light cycle
  • Small HOB power filter with coarse sponge for hosting extra bacteria
  • dual compact fluorescent light fixture- one 50/50 bulb and one Coralife colormax bulb, running on a 12 hour on/off light cycle.
  • 10 watt LED flood light. I know that it is a bit too close and has poor spread. I plan to bring the lights up a bit to resolve this.
  • Packed with live rock yet bare bottom to allow the tank to be extra easy to maintain.
  • The only livestock in this tank for now is a tuxedo urchin; I plan to keep this tank without fish. I plan to use it to quarantine invertebrates that I will put into my 75 gallon mixed reef.
I do a 2-3 gallon water change for this tank about every 3 weeks, using water from my 75 gallon display. My softies seem to do well with this setup. I guess I went this route after reading from Anthony Calfo that corals do better in a monoculture. Does anyone have advice on how to maximize both health and growth for a toadstool dominant tank. There are some toadstools that are hard to keep. I had a beautiful orange one that struggled for a wile in my 75 mixed reef, so I gave it to my brother. I really want this tank to be optimal for toadstools of every kind and sort if possible. Any advice on optimal feedings, parameters, and lighting? Some areas such as lighting I will not change until next year until can afford such.

That's awesome! I am a sucker for toadstools. The main issue is see is having to upgrade down the road because of how huge they get. I have been trying to get a long polyp frag off of a friend for years. I actually gave it to her because I got 3 toadstools at a frag swap, and the one I gave her ended up being the nicest lol.

Me too :-); Besides the tyree green toad stool, I have 1 of the nicest yellow-est yellow fiji that actually is yellow from being up hi near the light. The first 1 I had 3 years ago has 2 babies. I sold the mother and the big baby dirt cheap because they got too big. The last one is kicking near the size threadhold already ... :-(

Reefqueen and ngvu1, please post pics of your toadstool leather corals. I am in search of very long-polyped toadstools. I am trying to make an extensive collection of toadstools in this 10 gallon tank. I plan to cut and propagate as long as I can; however, I want all but one to grow a good bit. I hope to cut the big one by the end of the year or the beginning of next.

Is this a current pic? Do you have a frag or small colony left with the extra long tentacles? You wrote earlier, "The last one is kicking near the size threadhold already."

I gave it away. I am sure you can find those online :-). If you are local I will show you who got it.....hence a frag.

I don't have this one...yet lol. It is in a friend's tank, I gave it to her right after a swap when I realized I had gotten 3 different toadstools. I should have waited until it opened back up lol. This pic is junk, but it has bright green polyps.

IMO, that is impossible for a toadstool to get tentacles that are too long.
